What to expect▾

The journey. Your adventure begins at our riverside base, where you’ll meet your guides and receive all safety equipment and instruction. After a thorough briefing we head to the river for roughly 2 hours of rafting through the scenic lower reaches of the river.

The rapids. Grade II rapids strike the perfect balance of excitement and safety — enough whitewater for a thrill while staying comfortable for conversation, learning and taking in the scenery. Your guides navigate while teaching paddling technique and pointing out features along the way.

The full river experience.  Check out the jump rock to see if its on or hunt out a rapid suitable for swimming down.  Or take a leisurely swim in one of the many calm pools - the perfect way to cool off on a hot summers day

What you’ll learn▾

Important Information

Experience level & minimum age

Minimum age is 4, subject to river conditions. During high water (typically spring) the minimum age may rise for safety. We’ll advise you of current conditions when you book.

Swimming ability

Swimming ability is not essential, but all participants need to be aware they may end up in the river.  We begin with a thorough safety briefing which details how to avoid falling out and what to do if you find yourself in the river.  Non swimmers should disclose this to the trip leader so we can do our best to make you feel comfortable.

Health & fitness

Be in good general health — the trip involves moderate activity including paddling and climbing in and out of the raft. Please tell us about any medical conditions, injuries or pregnancy. If you’re unsure whether the trip suits you, get in touch.

Weather & cancellation

We run in most conditions — rain often makes for the best rafting. If river conditions are unsafe or extreme weather is forecast we’ll reschedule or refund in full. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your trip.

  • WorkSafe AAR regulated

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need rafting experience?▾

No experience necessary — this trip is perfect for first-timers. Our guides provide full instruction and are with you throughout the whole journey.

Will we get wet?▾

Yes! You’ll get splashed and possibly soaked, especially in the rapids — that’s part of the fun. We provide wetsuits when the water is cold.

What if my child is younger than 4?▾

For safety we can’t take children under 15kgs.   If your child is younger reach out and have a chat.

Can non-swimmers take part?▾

Yes, provided they’re comfortable in water and wear a life jacket at all times (required anyway). Please let us know in advance so our guides can help you feel comfortable.

What happens if someone falls out?▾

Rare on Grade II water, but if it happens their life jacket keeps them afloat and our guides are trained in swift-water rescue. We run through the procedure in the safety briefing.

Can I bring my camera?▾

Waterproof and action cameras (e.g. GoPro with a secure mount) are welcome. Phones and regular cameras can be provided a waterproof bag.

What Our Guests Say

Real experiences from real adventurers

★★★★★

We did the half day Clarence rafting trip. Our excellent river guides really knew their stuff. They togged us up with all the kit we needed, a good safety briefing, and then transported to the river. 2 hours of rafting down passed some stunning scenery. Our river guides showed us all the changes the 2016 earthquake caused to the river. Fascinating. A quick stop for tea & cake and then more rapids until we reached the sea. Simply awesome. Sincerely hoping we can fit in a multi day trip before we leave. Highly recommended – you won’t be disappointed.

Half Day February 2026
★★★★★

An amazing experience, none of us had rafted before. Guides were very knowledgeable of landmarks down the river, safety was a big priority for them also. As well as rafting we got to swim down the river next to the raft which was an awesome experience feeling the river’s power. To finish off we had some wood fire pizzas – the best pizzas you will have. Overall a great trip, would highly recommend to anyone, even those who have never rafted before! We will be doing the 3 day rafting trip next year!!

Half Day January 2026
★★★★★

One of the best multi day adventures we have had in NZ! The hard working guides for our trip were awesome in terms of their knowledge of the region, their rafting skills to keep us safe, their obvious passion for their job and the fantastic food they cooked on an open fire for our 4 night / 5 day trip. The scenery is remote, beautiful and unspoiled, and wildlife can be seen in their natural environment. Some of NZ’s largest farms / stations are along the Clarence River, and we felt like our group was the only people on the river the whole time, always good to be totally free of tourist hotspots! Ensure a rafting trip with Clarence River Rafting is on your bucket list – cannot recommend Clarence River Rafting highly enough, 10/10! We loved it!

5 Day Expedition Recent
★★★★★

Outstanding 4 day heli / rafting trip for our three families of parents and teenagers. Food and scenery were incredible, the guides were professional and fun. Can highly recommend to anyone for a family experience you will never forget.

4 Day Heli-Raft 2025
★★★★★

Classic kiwi service. It felt very relaxed and like we were in safe hands the whole time. There was no time pressure, lots of good quality food, and the staff were highly capable and friendly. Would do again and recommend to anyone interested in seeing the rugged kiwi back country. Thanks team.

Multi-Day 2023
★★★★★

Can’t rate it highly enough. The trip was so well run, the guides were highly skilled at steering the rafts, knowledgeable about the land, and cooking delicious meals over an open fire – beautiful risotto, roast chicken and gravy, incredible beef stew with wine and an orange. Not at all commercial; our guides felt like friends.

Multi-Day October 2022
★★★★★

An excellent multi-day rafting trip. Last week we did a 6-day trip rafting the Clarence River. The scenery was spectacular and the rafting was great fun. Our guides were outstanding – such hard workers and excellent cooks. The skill with which they steered the rafts in the river was impressive, with just the right amount of rodeo-style bumps and splashes of water.

6 Day Expedition October 2022
★★★★★

Gorgeous gorges and heaps of fun. Had an amazing trip along about 200km of the Clarence River (5-day trip) with guides Nicole, Ruby and Mitch. Amazing scenery, especially the gorges with the folded ancient rock. You see mountains and grazing land (including Molesworth Station), and you get to see the faultline that ruptured in the Kaikoura earthquake. There is also great birdlife – dotterels, terns, paradise ducks. The water is a mix of calm and rapids that were good for a complete novice like me. The guides make the trip – not only are they obviously highly skilled, they are heaps of fun and amazing cooks, given it’s campfire cooking.
